![]() ![]() I always try to run my encounters tough but fair, and I definitely want their very first Beholder fight to be memorable and fun. ![]() The fight can definitely have real danger of a PC dying if they mess up, but it shouldn't be unfairly difficult either. What would be a good level to aim at? Is 8th level too low? 9th? 10th? Even later? Its flight should pose lots of problems for the paladin I don't think they even know about the anti-magic eye or how quickly they'll figure out how to work around it it'll be the first legendary monster they face, so legendary actions, legendary resistance and potential lair actions will be a nasty surprise and obviously the eye rays are just so random and so potentially devastating that, having never actually ran a Beholder in battle, I have a really hard time estimating just how tough of a fight it'll be. The Beholder is a totally different beast, though. I've learned long ago that I need to throw really tough enemies at the party if I want to actually challenge them, and I generally have a pretty good idea of what will actually be tough and what won't. They may be new to DnD but they're quite experienced gamers and generally play reasonably well, and their party is actually really well balanced with no real weaknesses (they have a Paladin, Bard, Wizard and Cleric, as well as a Hunter Ranger who is currently on a hiatus from the game but may well return by the time we get to the Beholder fight, which would increase the party's damage significantly). The problem is, I'm not quite sure when the players will be ready to face a Beholder. I mean, I want to throw all the most iconic DnD monsters at them, and it doesn't get much more iconic than that! I'm planning big strokes way ahead, and the next story arc will have a big bad scheming everything in the background - one who will be revealed to be a Beholder. The party is now 6th level, having wrapped up their second major story arc, and we're about to get started with the next one. We're all gamers and have been playing all kinds of tabletop RPGs for years, but this is actually the very first time we're really exploring DnD (we tried 4e back when it was just released, didn't like it, and only now really fell in love with the system once we realized how fun and streamlined 5e is).Īs such, we've been having a lot of fun going through all the most iconic DnD monsters - the players will never have faced them before so it's always something completely new and exciting for them!
